🐒 Snow Monkeys To Snow Walls: What to Pack
❄️ Don’t Panic… You Don’t Need a Suitcase Full of Winter Clothes!
One of the questions we hear most is:
“Do I need to pack a bunch of winter clothes?”
The answer is NO! 🙌
The Snow Monkey Park and the Tateyama Kurobe Snow Wall are just 2 days of our 14-day Japan adventure.
The rest of our journey will be spent enjoying beautiful spring weather while exploring:
🌸 Tokyo
♨️ Hakone
🏯 Osaka
⛩️ Kyoto
🐒 Nagano
Our packing philosophy is simple:
🧳 One large checked suitcase + one backpack per traveler.
The secret isn’t packing bulky winter clothing…
It’s packing smart layers.
✅ What to Pack
👟 Waterproof walking or hiking shoes with good traction
🧦 1–2 pairs of warm socks
👕 Thermal base layer (top & bottom)
👖 Comfortable pants (jeans, travel pants, or hiking pants)
👚 Long-sleeve shirt
🧥 Fleece or hoodie
🪶 Lightweight packable puffer jacket
🧤 Lightweight gloves
🧢 Warm beanie or knit hat
🕶️ Sunglasses (the snow reflects a surprising amount of sunlight!)
🧴 Sunscreen & lip balm
❌ Leave These at Home
You do NOT need to fill your suitcase with bulky winter gear.
Skip items like:
❌ Heavy ski jacket
❌ Ski pants
❌ Snow bibs
❌ Ski goggles
❌ Snowshoes
❌ Bulky winter boots (unless you already own them)
Remember…
We’re sightseeing—not skiing!
🐒 Snow Monkey Park
One of Japan’s most unforgettable experiences!
You’ll enjoy approximately a 1-mile (1.6 km) walk along a maintained forest trail to see the famous Japanese macaques relaxing in natural hot springs.
Rentals Available
✔️ Snow boots
✔️ Winter jackets
✔️ Luggage storage
Don’t own snow boots?
Please don’t buy them just for this trip. Rentals are available if the weather calls for them.
❄️ Tateyama Kurobe Snow Wall
Prepare to experience one of Japan’s most breathtaking natural wonders.
We’ll travel through the mountains by:
🚌 Bus
🚠 Cable Car
🚡 Ropeway
🚍 Mountain Transportation
…while surrounded by towering walls of snow and incredible alpine scenery.
Typical April temperatures range from approximately:
27°F–43°F (-3°C to 6°C)
Even though it’s cold, you’ll be moving throughout the day, so layers are much more comfortable than one bulky coat.
💡 T&T Travel Insider Tip
Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on winter clothing before the trip…
Pack light and shop in Japan!
We’ll have opportunities to visit Uniqlo, one of Japan’s most popular clothing stores, where you can find:
✨ HeatTech thermal layers
✨ Ultra Light Down jackets
✨ Gloves
✨ Hats
✨ Scarves
Uniqlo prices are often lower in Japan than in the United States, making it the perfect place to pick up anything you decide you need—plus you’ll have a practical souvenir you’ll actually use again!
🎒 Our Recommended Snow Day Outfit
✔️ Thermal base layer
✔️ Long-sleeve shirt
✔️ Pants
✔️ Hoodie or fleece
✔️ Packable puffer jacket
✔️ Waterproof walking shoes
✔️ Warm socks
✔️ Gloves
✔️ Beanie
✔️ Sunglasses
That’s all you need to stay warm, comfortable, and photo-ready—without sacrificing half your suitcase.
